CROPROTECT

Croprotect is a free web based knowledge exchange for crop protection.

When developing IPM (integrated pest management) farmers can use Croprotect to find out about pest, weed and disease management, especially in situations where effective pesticides are not available and alternative approaches are required.

Why use Croprotect?

Croprotect tailors information to the crops that you grow, grouping together the pest-weed-disease complex for each crop you select.

Croprotect tells you about the biology and impact of the target and then goes straight to management recommendations.

Your interaction with the app can alert researchers at Rothamsted to growing problems and helps them to prioritise their work and find solutions to the issues you have.

How was it developed?

Croprotect has been developed in partnership with farmers and agronomists and development is continuing to involve the industry working with the Association on Independent Crop Consultants (AICC), Hutchinsons, Agrii and the NFU to ensure the system is appropriate for them

Dr Toby Bruce, Rothamsted Research is the senior scientist who co-ordinates Croprotect.

He comments: “We are listening to the needs of the farmers and agronomists. We know that they are the experts for their local fields and we are aiming to give decision support not decision making”.

"Indeed, the first pest, weed and disease targets have been selected based on number of votes from pioneer users of the system. The information on the system can be rapidly updated and is constantly growing” Dr Bruce added.
