Our principal asks on farming, flooding and the future

Flooding in the South West February 2014, Somerset Levels_20722

This forms our response to the National Flood Resilience Review.

The review, led by the cabinet office, was established to assess how the country can be better protected from future flooding and increasingly extreme weather events.

Our two-page document and the flood manifesto should help to influence the government’s attitude and priorities on flood management and agricultural land.

We recognise that farming has a key role to play in flood management. Where farmers provide a service in mitigating flood risk to help protect others, this must be a coherent, planned component of total catchment management, for which farmers must be fairly compensated.

In short, the government’s strategy to manage future flood risk must be to plan, protect and pay.
