The NFU have called on Defra to challenge the EU, after it has emerged that the department faces steep fines for 'non-compliance' in its administration of agri-environment schemes in England. The issue centres on payment processing, with the commission concluding that our system of rolling payments throughout the year does not comply with EU law. Changes could have serious implications for when farmers get their money - particularly if they joined a scheme well ahead of the May 15 deadline. As a result of the RPAs upgrade to the Rural Land Register, Natural England have identified that some field parcels may have changed such that the area payments for Environmental Stewardship linked to them will also have altered.
