Waste permits being reviewed

The main changes suggested include:

  • Addition and removal of waste codes
  • Changes to quantities of waste permitted
  • Changes to the provisions for temporary storage of waste prior to spreading
  • Enable operators to request deployments for areas greater than 50 hectares
  • Prohibit spreading in Groundwater Safeguard Zones for nitrate
  • Add restrictions on spreading in adverse conditions
  • Require pre-notification of the intention to commence spreading
  • Removal of some organic wastes from the deposit for recovery permit including dredging spoil and soil from cleaning and washing beet

The NFU has raised concerns including changes to the permit which prohibit landspreading of high readily available nitrogen wastes from Groundwater Safeguard Zones and a lack of justification for the reduction in the permit waste storage period from 12 to 6 months.
