What to consider before constructing an earth lined slurry lagoon on your farm? Guidance on soil suitability and testing.

If you are thinking about contructing an earth lined slurry lagoon there is new guidance available.

The Environment Agency have published a summary sheet outlining the necessary soil characteristics and  tests which must be carried out before constructing an unlined earth banked lagoon. It is vital you understand the soil type and permeability before construction begins. The guidance also advises where soil testing can be carried out and general design considerations.

A copy of the summary sheet can be found in Related Documents (top right)

Please be aware that the EA now reqires 14 days notice , prior to construction of new or improved slurry stores. The EA will then be able to inspect the planned store or modifications to ensure they comply with the rules, along with the results of the soil testing.
