In a letter sent to Andrea Leadsom MP by the NFU, in conjunction with NFU Cymru, NFU Scotland and the National Pig Association, we expressed our concerns on the impact Brexit would have on the UK’s protected food names. Iconic British products such as Cornish Clotted Cream and Yorkshire Wensleydale are protected under the European schemes.
Currently there are around 70 products within the UK which currently hold protected food names status, which is set to be held until we leave the EU. Food name protections guarantees authenticity and products are protected legally to stop imitation.
In a responding letter from the Secretary of State, Andrea Leadsom wrote to NFU President Meurig Raymond to reassure him that the government recognises the benefits from protecting our traditional and geographical food products and she will be continuing to work with producers to ensure appropriate protections are in place, now and for the future.
Ms Leadsom also responded to the labelling of lightly processed dairy products, stating that the government is considering an effective way to make the labelling of these products more transparent.
