Nutrition labelling will come in to force under the EU Food Information to Consumers Regulations (FIC) and it will require declaration of energy value, the amount of fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt.

Exemptions from this regulation include unprocessed products that compromise of a single ingredient or a processed product which the only process is maturing.

Also exempt are foods from micro businesses sold direct to the consumer or to a local retail establishment, supplying the final consumer. A micro business is defined by having less than 10 employees and a turnover/ balance sheet of less than £1.4m. Local is interpreted as establishments within the same county or adjoining counties but within 30 miles of the border of the county where the manufacturer is in.

A full list of the exemptions can be found in Annex V and Department of Health guidance can be found here.
