Why NFU surveys matter

NFU surveys are a really important tool for collecting the evidence that we need to effectively influence policymakers and support our lobbying asks.

The results from the first three quarters of the 2016 NFU Labour Providers Survey found that there was a dramatic change in labour availability within the space of 9 months, clearly showing the deterioration in the ability to obtain and maintain EU labour in the horticulture sector.

For example, over the course of 2016, we have moved from a landscape where, in quarter 1 (Q1), 100% of providers reported being able to recruit the right numbers of workers. But in quarter 2 (Q2), 13% of respondents were unable to meet the demands of the sectors they were supplying, rising to 47% in quarter 3 (Q3). Indeed, focussing on just August and September 2016, 60% of respondents were unable to meet the labour demands of the sectors that they were supplying.

These statistics emphasise the need for substantial trial of a Seasonal Agricultural Permit Scheme for non-EU workers in the 2017 season.

As an NFU member, you will receive a number of NFU surveys throughout the year. To help us with our lobbying on this important issues, you will shortly be receiving an invitation to respond to a NFU member-only survey called the End of Season Horticulture Survey. It is here that the NFU collects your experiences of the previous year's labour provision. Was supply adequate? Did you experience any issues? If so, what?

To help support us in our important work, I would urge you to take the time to respond to this call for information. Last year, the results showed that, in 2015, 29% of respondents (nearly 1 in 3) experienced problems securing an adequate supply of seasonal workers to meet their needs. We would like to know if you have experienced changes during 2016.
