The first recipient of the BPOA-Peter Seabrook bursary - Jamie Satterthwaite - is planning a study trip to the Netherlands after receiving his award in February.
At the end of this academic year, Jamie is planning to spend a month over the summer on working trip to growers in the Netherlands. Jamie is asking BPOA members to help him make contact with container pot plant nurseries in the Netherlands, who might be interested in offering him some work experience later this summer. As well as working on his studies, Jamie is working working part time for well known nursery Pentland Plants. David Spray, a long standing BPOA member and managing director of Pentland, said they were pleased to have such an enthusiastic young employee and, at the same time, to be able to help him with his chosen career.
Jamie’s academic work takes in studies of plant physiology, soil science, plant genetics and crop science. He is part of a small group of 8 students in production horticulture, and there are also 30 students working in plantsmanship and 4 more in garden design. In addition to the written work, Jamie is planning a practical project to study the development of rooting systems using tomato plants.
Jamie's interest in horticulture began following a holiday work in a friend’s nursery close to Dundee. It's a familiar pattern - it often seems to take a period of practical experience to appreciate the possibilities of employment in horticulture.
