Making YOUR voice heard: NFU responds to Red Tractor review

_40180

The assurance organisation’s rules across the farming sectors are reviewed every three years and Red Tractor was looking at changes for 2017 to 2020.

The NFU sits on the Red Tractor Technical Advisory Committees and relevant boards. That means we can represent our members and ensure their voices are heard when shaping, developing and amending standards.

It’s an essential role, giving the NFU the opportunity to assess proposals and make sure they are future-proofed, practical and relevant and provide value to scheme members. Our commodity boards at both national and regional level assessed the plans and members sent their thoughts to feed into the response.

NFU Director of Policy Andrew Clark said: “The NFU has submitted an overall response to the Red Tractor standards consultation, as well as each sector responding individually. The NFU believes that any new standards for Red Tractor should be fit for purpose and there must be a clear rationale behind its introduction.

“Red Tractor’s relationship with farmers is crucial and this should be built on and enhanced in the future. After all, Red Tractor farmers can be the scheme’s biggest supporters.

“The NFU’s overall vision for Red Tractor is for its logo and standards to be seen as the go-to marque for the food industry. It’s incredibly important that the logo helps the public make the connection that their food has been produced by farmers who care about food, where it’s from and how it’s produced.”
