Gwyn was born into a farming family in North Wales, and trained as an engineer with Rolls Royce and an engineering company in London, before returning to agriculture in Wales, studying at Coleg Meirion, and Glynllifon College of Agriculture.

He is currently a dairy farmer, farming in partnership in West Sussex milking 750 cows on heavy weald clay and NFU National Dairy Board Chairman. His duties include being a member of NFU Council Governance Board and NFU Director along with being Vice-Chairman of COPA Milk (Brussels).

He is the main board member and director of Dairy UK, Chairman of the Farmers Forum, MDC Council member and director. He is a past chairman of Farm Management and MDC Evaluations committees and member of FAWC (Farm Animal Welfare Council)

Gwyn cares passionately about the dairy industry and writes a weekly farming column for the West Sussex Gazette, and articles for dairy journals and other publications fairly regularly.
