Organic logo withdrawn

26 March 2008

A red-faced Commission has withdrawn proposals for a logo to appear on all organic food packaging.Aldi logo

As reported earlier this year, the move was delayed as the 'bio' logo - French for organic - bore too much of a resemblance to the Aldi supermarket (pictured).

The NFU lobbied hard against the plans as the logo made little connection to organic produce.

But this may not be the end of the road for the initiative - a competition to design a new logo will be launched during the summer!

More news from Brussels.

Are you an organic farmer? Is this a good idea? Let us know what you think below.

Laurence Hasson

"I'm so glad that this awful logo has been withdrawn. It does nothing but undermine the real value and ethics of organic production."

Rob Jewell

"The Soil Association logo is well known. Anything that distracts from it is bad. Also the euro bio logo does not show country of origin. What does Bio mean? Certainly no-one will connect it with organic."

Sarah Hodson

"Another logo will add nothing to our present labelling and will detract from the Soil Association logo which is well known and guarantees a higher standard. It will not show country ot origin which is important to people who want to reduce food miles."

Andy Bragg

I think we desperately need a good logo for all european organic farmers. Most labelling on all food is apalling in this country and in others. Customers are being mislead. The correct information on all food is essential.
