Gwyn Jones re-elected NFU Dairy Board chairman

28 March 2008

Gwyn Jones has been re-elected as chairman of the NFU Dairy Board.

Mr Jones, who milks 750 dairy cows in the Sussex Weald has been chairman since 2004 and will now serve in the post for a further two years. He said he was honoured to be able to continue in the role and see through the strategy outlined by the Dairy Board in its Vision document in 2005.

"I profoundly believe that the NFU's efforts have seen considerable progress in the dairy industry in the last four years, especially in terms of supply chain relations," Mr Jones said. "And while the dynamics of the sector have changed dramatically in less than 12 months, it is important that we drive through changes in milk contracts in particular to secure the long-term prosperity of dairy farmers".

The Board elected Andy Guy, who farms near Newark, Nottinghamshire, to serve as vice chairman. Speaking about his appointment, Mr Guy said: "I am very excited to have been elected as vice chairman of the Board and look forward to working with the chairman and Dairy team at the NFU. I believe the industry is entering a crucial period and that there are huge opportunities for farmers to influence the future.

"I firmly believe in sustainable farming, and both from an environmental and commercial perspective, I am sure the time is right for dairy farmers to seize the initiative in improving their environmental impact. We must look for ways to contribute to the solutions to climate change and play our part in providing answers to the challenges of food security. But if our dairy industry is to thrive in the future, it is important that our farmers are properly rewarded for their contribution. Profitable milk prices, better milk contracts, closer food chain relationships, and better balance at the negotiating table are key to this".

Mr Jones paid tribute to Mansel Raymond, the outgoing vice chairman. He said: "Mansel has been a staunch supporter of the NFU and all its efforts for dairy farmers. His support as vice chairman has been invaluable and he will continue to make an important contribution on the NFU Dairy Board and as chairman of NFU Cymru Dairy Board".
