NFU welcomes news that Bishop's Castle abattoir could reopen
The NFU has welcomed news that a Shropshire abattoir could be saved and hopes that investors come forward to bring it back to life.
Today, it was revealed that a feasibility study has identified "real potential for business to fulfill demand for high quality, locally sources meat" at the Bishop's Castle site.
Bishop's Castle Meat Ltd, at Love Lane Industrial estate, temporarily shut due to foot and mouth last autumn but bosses decided not to reopen it after restrictions were lifted.
Following the closure plans of a rescue package were discussed and the independent consultants' report, with funding from Advantage West Midlands, has drawn positive conclusions on the site and its location.
The NFU is encouraged by the findings and hopes investors can be found to take the business on to benefit farmers and the region's economy.
Oliver Cartwright, NFU regional public relations officer, said: "When the abattoir closed it was a huge disappointment and a blow for farmers in and around Bishop's Castle who were forced to take their animals around 20 miles to Craven Arms or Leintwardine or even further afield.
"We had heard there might be a rescue package for the site and I know this is something our Clun Forest and district branch would be very keen to see happen.
"It is pleasing to hear the study is generally very positive and I'm sure NFU members will be eager to hear more at a meeting at The Three Tuns, in Bishop's Castle, on May 19.
"We need to see the abattoir reopened not just for traceability but also as it will help bolster farming, the rural economy and create jobs.
"Hopefully now investors will come forward to support it."
The open meeting at Three Tuns will be held at 8pm and a presentation will be given on the feasibility study and future plans for the abattoir.
Interested parties, including potential investors, are welcome to go along and it is hoped NFU representatives and farmers will be at the event.
