He also explains why their breeding success in the wide-open spaces of the Northumberland hills is intertwined with the grazing livestock managed by the area's hill farmers. These animals, he says, help provide the perfect breeding habitats with grass grazed to the right height and their manure helping to sustain the insect life needed to raise chicks.
