The Back British Farming charter is being supported by a growing number of high profile individuals and organisations across the North East.
Already MPs, MEPs and region-based retailers can be counted amongst those signing the charter.
Here is what they have to say about why they are Backing British Farming:
Timothy Kirkhope - MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber
“The farming industry is very important to Yorkshire and the Humber, not only providing a wealth of produce and some world famous landscapes but also underpinning two other crucial sectors for our region – tourism and the local food and drink industry.
"That’s why I am pleased to get behind the Back British Farming charter and would urge others to do the same. Food production is something we should take very seriously.”
Bradford-based Wm Morrisons Supermarket
“We have always been a supporter of UK agriculture and buy a bigger proportion of the food that we sell from British farmers than any other major supermarket.
“We were therefore delighted to be able to sign up to the Back British Farming charter and fully support its goals.”
Anne McIntosh - MP for Thirsk & Malton & Chairman of the EFRA Committee
"It is good for Britain and good for British farmers. We produce the best meat, vegetables and other produce. We have the most efficient and productive farmers but we also need to become more self-sufficient in food. We can trace our food from farm to fork with the assurance of buying British. That is why I back British farming!"
Julian Sturdy - MP for York Outer
“With farming at the heart of Yorkshire’s rural economy, and underpinning Yorkshire’s tourism and food and drink industries, it is vital we have a thriving farming sector that can deliver the quality local food that people want, not to mention the landscapes and environment for which our county is famous.
“We know it has been a tough year for our farmers this year so I am delighted to get behind the Back British Farming charter. Government has a role to play in providing the right framework for the farming industry to thrive, allowing them to focus on the challenge of producing more food while still delivering on the environment. I for one certainly pledge to do all I can to ensure this happens.”
Guy Opperman - MP for Hexham
“As someone who grew up on a farm, I know only too well why it’s important to get behind our local producers. We enjoy some of the best local food and drink, produced right here in Northumberland, and that’s something we should celebrate. Farmers need and deserve our support so I am delighted to sign the Back British Farmers charter.”
