Discovery Barn moo-ves to Bucks County Show
Families with children aged four to seven will love the interactive nature of the NFU’s Discovery Barn helping youngsters to understand farming and food.
The NFU Discovery Barn will be attending the Bucks County Show, near Aylesbury, on Thursday, August 30, 2018 and will be located in Avenue G on the Weedon Park showground, alongside the NFU/NFU Mutual hospitality tent.
Berks, Bucks and Oxon NFU adviser Georgia Craig says: “This travelling exhibition provides a great opportunity for youngsters to learn more about our food. There are quizzes, a roast dinner puzzle, a model dairy cow to milk and a chance to learn how tractors and technology help farmers produce food and care for the countryside. Free activity packs are also available to visiting children.”
Teachers visiting the Discovery Barn can find out more about the NFU’s new education initiative. Its Science Farm resource packs, aimed at primary school teachers of children, have been designed in line with the national curriculum. Each resource starts with a video that stars pupils on a farm. These films reveal how carrots are produced, the food chain of a school dinner and a sensory trail – exploring a farm with your five senses.
The NFU has also launched its new Farmvention competition challenging primary school pupils to design their own farming or food products.
The launch comes ahead of the next school year to give teachers time to plan for the competition.
