Katie Ackland, from Broadclyst near Exeter, has been named as this year’s top student in the West Country Dairy Awards.
Katie, 19, was one of four finalists who undertook a day of interviews at Wyke Farms’ Sustainability Centre in Somerset, emerging as the unanimous winner.
Now a student at Harper Adams, Katie (who is pictured with the other finalists) grew up on her family's dairy, beef and arable farm and realised her main interest lay in dairy after her first year of studies.
She is particularly interested in the different systems used within the industry to produce the same product, and advances in genetics and overcoming disease. She will use the award to help towards her tuition fees. Wyke provided all the finalists with a goody bag and the winner with a hamper of cheese.
• The West Country Dairy Awards distributes £15,000 each year to students of all ages undertaking further education courses related to the dairy industry. For more information, go to www.afcp.org.uk/node/66 or call the administrator, Donna Evans, on 01823 680968.
