“Technology is becoming ever more important and the Government has to help farmers be in a position to invest and be able to reach their goals, whether that’s for food production or the environment,” he said.

He reminded the meeting that food security was also a matter of national security.

“When Hess was captured during World War Two and asked about Hitler’s invasion plans, he said there are no plans we’re going to starve you out. That’s a reminder that we must not become over-dependent on imported food, especially when it is not produced to the same standards as our own.”

The meeting also heard from Tractor Ted creator David Horler and Andy Fussell, who runs a diversified business taking in farming, haulage and rape oil production.
