Dr Coffey was Suffolk's first female MP when she succeeded John Gummer in the safe Conservative seat of Suffolk Coastal in 2010. She studied Chemistry at Somerville College Oxford and gained her PhD at University College, London.

After University Dr Coffey worked for confectionery company Mars Inc. and qualified as a chartered management accountant. In 2007, Coffey became finance director for Mars Drinks UK, however she stood down in 2009 to fight an unsuccessful campaign to become an MEP. She then worked as a property finance manger for the BBC while looking for a Parliamentary seat to run in.

As an MP she has chaired the All-Party Group on Coastal & Marine and held office on other groups such as beer, renewable and sustainable energy, and people who live of the gas grid.
