The 25-year plan, launched by environment secretary Liz Truss yesterday, aims to increase the country's ambitions for food and farming and set out how we can grow more, buy more and sell more British food.

NFU director of policy Andrew Clark said: “This is the first essential step in getting the entire industry together to develop a long-term plan for the whole of the supply chain and farming industry.

"The time for short-term approaches is long gone. In an increasingly volatile world, we urgently need to be thinking now about what needs to be in place in the next five, 10, 20 years’ time to create an environment where our farmers and growers can invest for the future and start to reverse the decline in UK self-sufficiency – which we suggest should be used as a key benchmark for progress.

“We look forward to being a key voice in shaping the work and the vision that should emerge from this project – a vision that focuses on contributions from everyone involved.”

The NFU highlighted five key asks prior to the 2015 general election and now look forward to feeding these into this long-term plan.
