Poor weather and working at height

At this time of year when many will be carrying out winter maintenance it’s important to take extra care. Snow, ice, rain and wind will all have an impact on how safely task can be carried out. For example snowfall will add additional weight to roofs that may weaken its structural integrity. Snow, rain and ice may also make it harder to locate weaker parts of the roof such as roof lights or corroded roofing sheets and can make surfaces slippery. Short days and low light levels will increase risks too.

Roof work is a high risk activity, and most fall injuries can be avoided. The following rules should followed:

  • avoid work at height where you can
  • use work equipment or measures to prevent falls
  • use work equipment that minimises the distance and consequences of a fall

More information on how to prevent falls can be found on the HSE website.
