About you

Are you a committed and driven person with excellent communication and influencing skills? Do you have an interest in economic policy development and experience in an economics related role? 


We are looking for a motivated and capable colleague to join the NFU Economics team during a time when the UK is undergoing a significant transition in relation to its agricultural, environmental, and international trade policies. Ideally you will be motivated to be involved in a range of policy work which looks to understand the impacts on and opportunities for British Agriculture during this period of change and beyond.  


To be successful in this diverse and exciting role you will ideally have previous experience working in an economic policy/analyst role, with a track record of working effectively with a range of stakeholders to influence outcomes. You will have the ability to synthesise and communicate technical and complex information effectively at all levels.   You will use your knowledge and expertise to influence, persuade and provide strategic advice to others as required. 


You will have strong written and verbal communication skills, along with excellent and proven problem-solving abilities.  You will be confident in using Microsoft Excel. You will be adept at prioritising a busy schedule and work effectively under pressure when required. Astute and politically sensitive, you’ll be comfortable delivering lively and informative presentations grounded in sound economic policy to a variety of audiences as well as expertly handling media enquiries.   


About the role

This role offers the opportunity to work within economic policy development, in areas such as agricultural policy, food security, natural capital, net zero transition, levelling up, environmental policy and international trade policy.


As the NFU’s Senior Economist you will play a key role in the development of NFU policy by conducting economic analysis and communicating the results effectively across the organisation, to industry stakeholders and to members. 


You will be responsible for assessing the impacts of and advising on the key economic matters and policy factors of significance to rural economies and the farming industry. 


We are currently piloting a ‘hybrid working’ scheme that gives colleagues the choice of working from home for up to 3 days a week, with other working days being from the office, or out and about with our members. 


Once Covid-19 and government guidelines allow the role will require some national and European travel for NFU business and a requirement to travel to meetings in London. You will have an excellent opportunity to raise your profile within the food and farming industry and engage extensively with policy makers within government, the private sector and NGO’s.
