Iestyn Pritchard

County Adviser

“Somebody somewhere will have the answer for you and will go above and beyond to provide more for you, which I think is a very good quality and indicative of the way that we work here.”

I represent members in the area, act as secretariat to the county structure, and liaise with stakeholders such as the national park, MPs, assembly members, local authorities and deal with individual casework for members across the region. I also provide support to the group secretary team across five offices and assist with membership recruitment – in a nutshell!

I enjoy the variety the most. You could be dealing with a practical farming issue in the morning or working on something very specific where I’d utilise the expertise of another colleague to get clarity on an issue. It’s rewarding when you get answers, or a situation rectified, for members. There’re no two cases the same and it’s a case of starting from scratch each time so it’s very rewarding when you get a positive result in the end. You feel like you’re part of a team here and there is a vast amount of information and knowledge available to you from the wider NFU team. Somebody somewhere will have the answer for you and will go above and beyond to provide more for you, which I think is a very good quality and indicative of the way that we work here.

If you end up in front of a group of people representing the NFU, you can be so well prepared because of the NFU’s wealth of briefings, papers and statistics. We’re very good at relaying information from either the President or DG, if they have met with the government for example, it puts you in a very strong position when talking with members to explain what we’re doing as well as with politicians, and you feel very well informed.

When I started, I received very comprehensive training specific to my role and the organisation were very generous with time and money to get the expertise required. Within the region, the support from HR to develop your skills is great, and the team are very open in you approaching them to request opportunities and happy to invest the future of our colleagues.
