The umbrella organisation for farming unions in the EU has hit back at rumours that the European Commission will demand a 30% cut in ammonia emissions in its upcoming review of air quality policy.
It also said that emissions reductions already achieved by European farmers should be fully recognised, in order not to discourage early movers from taking future action.
For instance UK ammonia emissions have fallen by 22% since 1990, and there have been comparable cuts in other European countries. Copa said this had been achieved through the use of industry initiatives and voluntary schemes aimed at increasing awareness of the problem and solutions.
In a statement, Copa said the industry would like to see more voluntary efforts rather than legislation and urged the commission to find a workable solution. A review of the EU air quality policy is expected to be announced by the end of the year.
