A number of countries are hopeful that the Paris deal can be fully ratified and come into force sooner than the original target date of 2020 – this requires signature and ratification by individual countries representing at least 55% of world GHG emissions and 55% of world population.
The United Nations says the record turnout for the signing ceremony shows overwhelming global support for tackling the disruption of the Earth's climate. The business community in the United States, including food processors and food service majors such as Kellogg's, General Mills and Starbucks, has also issued a statement backing the Paris Agreement.
The NFU previously welcomed the commitments made in the final text of Paris Agreement to food security as well as tackling climate change "in a manner that does not threaten food production”. Through our association with COPA-COGECA and WFO, we look forward to influencing future work on agricultural adaptation to climate change by the secondary UN working group known as the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).
