Farm worker dies from severe blood loss

Field near Stoneleigh Park Gate 3 February_58004

The employee, aged between 55 and 64 years-old, is believed to have been injured in the line of work and died from the resulting blood loss.

Accidents and illness can happen at any time and farmers need to be prepared to deal with such events.

Consider taking the following steps on your farm to help ensure injuries are dealt with quickly and effectively:

  • All farms must have planned for emergencies and have first-aid equipment available at or near the work site. What is appropriate will depend on the risks of injury and time it will take emergency services to arrive.
  • Appoint someone to take charge of first-aid arrangements, including looking after the equipment and facilities and calling the emergency services when required.
  • Consider the need for mobile phones or radios if they would reduce the time taken for the emergency services to reach a casualty.

Further guidance on first aid at work can be found on the HSE website and in the free HSE leaflet ‘Basic advice on first aid at work’.
