Work-related ill health dominated by mental health issues

Stress, depression or anxiety are the leading causes of work-related ill health across Great Britain and a major challenge for all industries, including agriculture.

The HSE’s health and safety at work statistics report for 2017 showed that 526,000 British workers had suffered from work-related mental health issues in the previous year, which accounted for 40% of all work-related ill health cases.

The report also says that 12.5million working days were lost as a result, with the most common causes cited as workload, lack of support and violence, threats or bullying.

An updated report for 2018 is due to be published by the HSE on 31 October and it is expected to show little change in these numbers.
