NFU responds to HGV speed limit consultation

Lorry on country road_275_243

NFU Position Summary:

  • The NFU is generally supportive of the increase in speed limits and believe that this would help reduce rural road congestion and improve safety.
  • The NFU believes that an increase to 50mph is appropriate. However where there is a local speed limit reduction to 50mph, the associated speed limit for the HGVs should remain at 40Mph. This will ensure that there is still a proportionate difference in speed limits, and that the limit reduces appropriately for the local circumstances.
  • The NFU believes that it is important that the speed limit for tractors is also raised to ensure that the disparity between their speed and the general flow of traffic is reduced.
