“This independent scientific advice from EFSA we hope will counterbalance the scaremongering activity we have seen from the anti-pesticide lobby after findings from the IARC monograph programme were published earlier this year.
“Glyphosate is a vital tool for farmers in the UK and around the world in protecting crops and the supply of food from these crops. It’s crucial that we have an understanding of the importance of this herbicide from the EU Commission as it decides on the inclusion of glyphosate on the EU list of approved active substances.
“The NFU always advocates good stewardship in crop production by farmers and at the same time we call for a balanced, science based approach in the way they are regulated.
“Many of the key actives we rely on to control pests, weeds and disease and to protect crops from weather damage remain under threat from campaigning activity and subsequent political pressure. It's good to see that in relation to glyphosate at least we are heading back towards sensible regulation.”
