An update from the Nematicide Stewardship Programme

The Nematicide Stewardship Programme’s (NSP) was formed in May 2015, to promote the correct use of the nematicides ‘Vydate 10G’, ‘Mocap’ and ‘Nemathorin’.

The programme includes all stakeholders involved in the supply, distribution and use of these products, along with those who purchase crops, including representatives from NFU, Corteva, Potato Processors Association, Syngenta, AHDB, Certis, Red Tractor, NIAB and Agronomists.

AHDB state that potato-cyst nematode (PCN) is an important potato pest, causing damage of up to £50m/year. Growers use all methods of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to manage PCN , such as growing on clean land, having a long rotation, growing resistant/tolerant varieties, use of bait plants and use of nematicides.

Nematicides are a key tool in the armoury for control of this damaging pest. The NSP has made progress in promoting a responsible use of these products, by investing time into providing clear stewardship guidance via a best practice protocol. But there is still more to do, to ensure these important products are available for years to come.

Since the spring of 2015, the NSP has overseen the training of nearly 1,400 delegates, across 50 workshops, covering the equivalent of 65% of UK potato farms. This is being rolled out further via a series of new e-learning courses. The first module on the requirements for applying nematicides was launched earlier this year. To sign up to the e-learning course please visit: https://www.artistraining.com/e-learning.

By offering online training, which is also registered for BASIS and NRoSO points, the NSP aims to reach a wider range of growers and operators. By providing a permanent, up-to-date resource that is freely available, it is hoped that continued professional development within the industry will promote best practice among operators.

The NSP has also commissioned two further online modules, which cover product labels and application machinery. The first of which will be launched later this year, and those applying nematicides are encouraged to sign up to the online programme.

Looking forward

As the key period for PCN control and the use of nematicides approaches it is important that growers are aware of the NSP protocol and best practice guidelines.

Understanding PCN pressure in the field is a key step in the guidance. As part of this the industry has been working with the AHDB on the new PCN Soil Sampling Guide. This guide is a welcome update on the current understanding around PCN management and control. It brings together scientific knowledge and practical experience of sustainable integrated management techniques, which will be extremely valuable to both growers and agronomists alike. Through encouraging best practice, we can make sure these products continue to support the industry for years to come.
