Grocer letter on plant based alternatives to milk

Michael Oakes, Dairy Chairman_39288

I am writing with respect to the article entitled ‘Revealed Britain's fastest growing milk!’ published in The Grocer on 9 December 2016.

The headline risked causing confusion among your readership, since the article was actually about the growth of plant-based alternatives to milk, and not about milk itself.

There is legislation in place which seeks to prevent retailers and manufacturers from misleading consumers about the products they produce and sell. As a result, and in order to protect consumers, non-dairy products must not be labelled, advertised or presented as dairy products.

The NFU will continue to press for clear, non-ambiguous labelling and promotion. Through our Back British Farming campaign, our focus remains to promote British farming and British dairy products through positive and constructive messaging and ensure people understand and value British dairy.
