The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a professional driving qualification separate from a normal driving licence and applies to:

  • Drivers of passenger-carrying vehicles with more than eight passenger seats, for example on a D category licence (e.g. a minibus); and
  • Drivers of goods vehicles over 3.5t, for example on a C category licence (e.g. livestock wagons but not livestock trailers towed behind a 4x4. Vehicles registered as agricultural vehicles e.g. tractor are also exempt as they are driven on a B category license)

As the regulations stand, farmers operating either of the above types of vehicle may only be exempt from CPC requirements under restrictive conditions. If you're unsure if the Driver CPC requirement applies to your business, please see the factsheet in the related documents section.
