Farm Safety: Risk Management

NFU services designed to help members put in place a good Health & Safety management system that can help to prevent accidents, injuries or even fatalities.

Why do you need a Health & Safety management system?

Every business has a duty to meet Health & Safety regulations and if you don't comply you are breaking the law. A good Health & Safety management system can help prevent accidents, injury or even fatalities, the costs of which it is not possible to insure against.

As an NFU member, there are several benefits you can take advantage of to help guide you through the process:

NFU specialist advice

  • NFU CallFirst: Our qualified team of specialist advisers can provide professional advice and guidance on a comprehensive range of issues including health and safety. If your query requires further professional help, we recommend you contact NFU Mutual for a quotation. Call NFU CallFirst on 0370 845 8458.
  • Health & Safety Business Guides: user-friendly and easy to understand legal guidance booklets are written and regularly updated to assist you with legal matters you may face when running a farming business.
  • Dedicated health, safety and wellbeing advice pages: Providing the latest information on the law; guidance from the HSE and practical advice from NFU experts, which will help you and your family stay safe on farm.

Farm safety eLearning course

This e-learning course is provided by Lantra and developed with the HSE. It aims to help farmers better identify and manage everyday safety risks in the farm workplace. The course has eight modules covering the major causes of injury in the farm workplace such as machinery, falls from height, falling objects, livestock, electricity, and vehicles. It takes approximately two hours to complete in one sitting but you can break it down into sections and complete over a convenient period of time.

The course will help you understand your legal responsibilities for health and safety and that of your employees, contractors, visitors, and anyone affected by your work. On completion of the course a certificate is awarded.

NFU members get a 10% discount off the price of the e-learning course.
