The two exemptions to enforcement of drivers’ hours currently in force cover:

  • Anyone driving in Great Britain under the EU drivers’ hours rules and undertaking carriage of goods by road where it is deemed necessary.
  • Anyone driving under the EU drivers’ hours rules involved in the international carriage of goods by road or the carriage of goods between GB and NI.

These exemptions were due to expire on 22 January, but have now been extended until 23:59 on 31 March.

The allowances of the two relaxations differ, and a driver may only make use of one of the relaxations. The relaxation for use in GB carries the additional requirement that operators must notify the Department for Transport prior to using the relaxation and must report how it has been used one week after the end of the relaxation period. Details for making these notifications can be found on the notices linked below.
