NFU discusses importance of food security at Lib Dem party conference

The virtual event was held online as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. NFU Vice President Tom Bradshaw was joined by Tim Farron MP, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for food and rural affairs. Both the panellists answered questions from conference delegates and shared their thoughts on what the nation’s policy on food should look like as the country recovers from COVID-19.

Mr Farron used his opening remarks to praise British farmers for the work they have done throughout the pandemic and stated that the government must recognise 'the importance of protecting our world-leading animal welfare and environmental standards in trade deals'.

The panel also faced questions from conference delegates on eating less meat. Mr Bradshaw set out very clearly the environmental credentials of British meat and the difference in production standards between meat produced in this country compared to the rest of the world. Mr Farron followed up on this point by highlighting the importance of sourcing local, British meat.
