Wind power overtakes nuclear

According to the latest National Grid data, which you can see in real time here, major wind farms were matching or exceeding nuclear power output throughout the weekend and into Monday and Tuesday, with the remnants of hurricane Gonzalo likely to prolong the surge in green power generation.

Wind power set a new record on Sunday by providing 24% of the UK’s electricity supply for the entire day. The previous record stood at 22% of total generation in August this year.

Four nuclear plants are presently shut down due to unplanned outages and refuelling, and a major fire on Sunday at the Didcot gas power station showed than even 'traditional' power stations need backing up with other sources of electricity.

As more and more projects come online, evidence is growing that wind and other renewables can indeed be relied upon for predictable power generation, making a growing contribution to national energy needs.
