Paper sludge or crumble is a by-product of the paper recycling and manufacturing process and consists mostly of short wood fibres (cellulose) and clay fillers. Paper sludges have an organic matter content, generally around 50 per cent dry weight. Organic matter can make a significant contribution to the physical structure and biological nature of the soil. Application of sludges can lower the bulk density of the soils, increase moisture availability and improve drainage.
