The classic, which dates back nine centuries, fended off domestic and even foreign rivals including Red Leicester, Stilton, Brie and Parmesan.
Researchers from pickle manufacturer Branston quizzed 2,000 people and asked them to rank their top five favourite cheeses. Other results revealed that 9% could eat an entire block of cheese in one sitting while 20% of 18-24 years olds had at least two cheese sandwiches every week. Meanwhile, the favoured way of eating cheese is on toast, followed by a toasted sandwich.
