World School Milk Day 2018

Launched in 2000, it has become an annual event, with more than 30 countries around the world joining in.

The NFU is keen to promote the consumption of milk in schools and ensure dairy products remain affordable and accessible to young children to enable healthy diets and support future consumption trends.

How we are celebrating

Following on from last year’s successful event at a primary school in Birmingham, the NFU education and dairy teams will be joining forces with two schools in Coventry on Wednesday (September 26) - Saint John Fisher Catholic Primary School and Ss Peter & Paul Catholic Primary School.

90 children will be split into three groups to take part in a number of fun and educational activities with a food and farming theme - talking to a dairy farmer, making ice cream as part of a Milkolympics activity and researching the nutritional value of milk using the Farmvention researching nutrition resources.

Looking ahead:

Currently schools in England, Wales and Scotland can sign up to the School Milk Subsidy Scheme run by the RPA under the EU School Milk Scheme. However, the UK’s exit from the EU will halt access to the EU Scheme. The UK government has committed to match any shortfall up to 2020 but longer-term prospects remain unclear.

NFU Dairy Adviser: "School milk has a vital role to play in helping children maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Improving children’s diet in school is critical to tackling rising obesity levels, dehydration and young people’s deficiencies in important nutrients like iodine and calcium.

"The NFU are committed to ensuring milk and other dairy products remain accessible and affordable to schools to help promote a healthy, balanced diet, support the UK dairy industry and develop consumption trends for the future."
