For World Curlew Day on Wednesday 21 April 2021, Northumberland farmer and member of the NFU's national Hill & Upland Farming Forum, Ross Wilson - who farms on the edge of Northumberland National Park, talks about why these iconic birds are such an important part of the county's identity.

He also explains why their breeding success in the wide-open spaces of the Northumberland hills is intertwined with the grazing livestock managed by the area's hill farmers. These animals, he says, help provide the perfect breeding habitats with grass grazed to the right height and their manure helping to sustain the insect life needed to raise chicks.
