With the deadline for Defra’s ‘Health and Harmony’ consultation on post-Brexit farming policy fast approaching, the NFU HQ Horticulture Advisers have embarked on a series of visits around the country to gather horticultural insights to feed into the industry’s vision for the future of farming and horticulture in the UK.

With visits in Kent, West Sussex, Cornwall and Gloucester, the HQ horticulture team have collated a wealth of feedback from their meetings that have been fed into the wider industry vision. This has been coupled with the fantastic responses that have been submitted to our NFU staff from members around the country.

The NFU will be submitting its formal response to the Brexit paper imminently pressing government to develop an ambitious policy that retains and enhances the productive capacity of the farming industry, as a national strategic asset.

It is important not to underestimate the scale and significance of the policy changes at stake. The right response could see the horticulture sector achieve more under a domestic policy than it ever achieved under the CAP.

That’s why we’re urging growers to respond individually. There is strength in numbers and we want to see that our industry remains at the forefront of this sector’s future policies.

The consultation closes on 8 May, and growers with an interest in the future of UK farming should respond.
