NFU Livestock Young Producers Scheme meeting

The meeting provided the young producers with the opportunity to have their voice heard on the most pressing issues currently facing the livestock sector as well as offering the opportunity to network and hear first-hand about the work that the NFU is doing for its members and the agricultural industry on the whole.

The participants were a mix of interested NFU members and those partaking in various food and farming industry schemes with McDonald’s and Tesco and heard from NFU Chief Livestock Adviser John Royle and NFU National Livestock Board Chairman Charles Sercombe.

They also heard from NFU Vice President Guy Smith who told the participants, "Young producers are the future of agriculture, a dynamic and changing industry. We're making sure that our voice is heard throughout the Brexit debate to get farmers the best deal."

The participants were a mix of interested NFU members and those partaking in various food and farming industry schemes such as McDonald’s and Tesco.

Charles Sercombe chaired a Q&A session with wide-ranging discussion from public perceptions, to future support structures after Brexit with the group.

On Brexit, Board Chairman Charles Sercombe told the young producers, “The government is now listening to the requirements of a sustainable livestock industry.

“We want to help offer solutions to the issues within the livestock sector with the help of the next generation of producers.”

Young producer Rebecca Adams from McDonald’s Progressive Young Farmers Scheme said: “I learnt a lot about the work of the NFU and how they are helping to resolve the issues within the livestock sector.

“I’m looking forward to seeing a closer relationship between the supply chain and British farmers in the future.

“The most important thing I will take away from the NFU Livestock Young Producers Scheme meeting was the importance of knowledge transfer from the older generation to the next generation of young producers.”

The NFU Livestock Young Producers Scheme will meet again over the coming months.
