The national progeny test, RamCompare, will expand in 2017 to test more rams and represent more breeds. We aim to mate over 3,000 ewes to RamCompare sires in autumn 2017.
The project requires over 60 rams next year from a range of terminal sire breeds. See background information for selection criteria.
Any ram breeding businesses involved will gain from new information on how their ram’s progeny performed for commercially relevant traits. New estimated breeding values (EBVs) on days to slaughter, carcase weight, carcase fat and carcase conformation will become available due to the RamCompare project.
The cost of testing a ram within the project is nearly £5,000 per ram and it is recognised that through the new rates, which for rams are up to £400/ram and semen is up to £5/straw, that breeders engaged in the project are also contributing towards this national testing programme.
