Join the NFU's poultry team on 19 March for their annual Poultry Research Seminar.

Now in its sixth year, this annual event aims to bring together people from across the poultry sector to discuss the latest academic and on-farm research. The event also offers the opportunity for networking and has previously provided the starting point for research collaboration.

Speakers will include:

  • Gordon Hickman, Head of Exotic Disease Control, Defra.
  • Dr Ashley Banyard, Avian Virology Workgroup Leader and Head of the National Reference Laboratory for Influenza and Newcastle Disease virus, APHA.
  • Dr Sarah Struthers, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh.
  • Shaun Cawthraw, Research Scientist, APHA.
  • Dr Fiona Short, Innovation Manager for Nutrition, CIEL.
  • Dr Maureen Wakefield, Principal Scientist and Project Lead of Fera’s Insect Research Laboratory, Fera Science.
  • Sam Laing, Agriculture Innovation and Data Manager, Avara Foods.
  • David Throup, Farmer and Nuffield Scholar.

Theme 1:  Avian Influenza

Gordon Hickman OBE, Head of Exotic Disease Control, Defra – Update on HPAI Vaccination and the work of the Joint Industry and Government Vaccination Taskforce.
   
Professor Ash Banyard, Influenza and Avian Virology Workgroup Leader at APHA and Head of the National Reference Laboratory for Influenza and Newcastle Disease – Avian influenza in the UK: Outputs from FluMAP and introducing FluTrailMap.

Theme 2: Developments in Poultry Health and Welfare

Dr Shaun Cawthraw, Salmonella in Poultry Research Team Lead, APHA – Salmonella in Poultry: Research at APHA.

Dr Sarah Struthers, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh – Breeding for better beaks: an alternative approach to mitigating feather pecking damage.

Theme 3: Innovations in Sustainable Poultry Production

Dr Fiona Short, Innovation Manager for Nutrition, CIEL – How farmers can improve the sustainability of poultry meat and egg production in UK systems.

Dr Maureen Wakefield, Senior Applied Entomologist, Fera Science – Research into possible food substrates for insect larvae. 

Sam Laing, Agriculture Innovation and Data Manager, Avara Foods – Black Soldier Fly in Commercial Broiler Feed.

David Throup, Farmer and Nuffield Scholar – Poultry Manure: A study into the storage, bi-product capabilities and the impact on environment sustainability.
