The health and welfare of their birds is the main priority for British poultry farmers. NFU Poultry Board Chair James Mottershead shares how poultry farming methods provide reassurance to consumers.

British poultry farmers are some of the most progressive, forward-thinking food producers in the world. Every day, they work hard to deliver high-quality, affordable food while making the health and welfare of their birds their top priority.

Across the UK, poultry farmers are always looking to make improvements where needed on their farms – not because they have to, but because they want to do what’s right for their birds and for their customers.

Welfare investments

One example in the poultry meat sector is the move to reduce the number of birds that are kept in the poultry house. It’s a change that has not only seen birds being provided with more space but also meets what people expect from high-quality British food.

Similarly in the egg sector, significant investment has also gone into flock enrichment, and birds in all production systems are provided with space to display natural behaviours such as preening, nesting and scratching.

Farmers are also investing in better facilities such as equipment and housing and new technology to monitor their birds more closely. These steps help ensure birds are healthy, comfortable and well cared for at every stage of their lives.

“We know people want to feel confident about where their food comes from and our farming methods are designed to give that reassurance.”

Health and welfare comes first

British poultry farmers are proud of the standards they work to.

We know people want to feel confident about where their food comes from and our farming methods are designed to give that reassurance. From the way we manage our flocks to the food they eat, every part of the system is focused on doing things properly.

As NFU Poultry Board Chair, I can see the passion, care and commitment our members have for their birds and farms. The health and welfare of the birds always comes first – and that’s something the public can be proud of, too.

British farmers will keep raising the bar, making sure that the nation’s food is not only produced to high standards, but done so with integrity, responsibility and care.
