Defra is looking for new Secretary of State members to join National Park Authorities and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Conservation Boards around the country. The deadline for applications is 20 February 2023.

The National Park Authorities and AONB Conservation Boards play an important role in achieving the government's commitments to protect 30% of land by 2030, and their target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Secretary of State members have an important role in delivering these targets, while championing diversity and inclusion, especially in identifying strategies to improve access to protected landscapes to all parts of society.

Influencing your area

Secretary of State members have an important role in influencing priorities for National Park Authorities and AONBs. For example, they:

  • Ensure the National Park Authority/AONB Conservation Board furthers its statutory purposes.
  • Agree plans that ensure National Parks/AONBs are nature-rich places that are available to all parts of society.
  • Utilise broad knowledge and skills to manage local and national interests, ensuring the national interest is taken fully into account.

  • Chilterns AONB - 2 confirmed appointment vacancies
  • Cotswolds AONB - 2 confirmed appointment vacancies
  • Exmoor NPA - 1 confirmed appointment vacancy
  • Dartmoor NPA - 1 confirmed appointment vacancy
  • North York Moors NPA - 2 confirmed appointment vacancies
  • South Downs NPA - 1 confirmed appointment vacancy

Who can apply?

Defra welcomes applications from enthusiastic individuals with a genuine passion for the work of National Park Authorities and AONB Conservation Boards.

The work involved includes conserving and enhancing natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the areas, and promoting the public’s understanding and enjoyment of the area’s special qualities.
