NFU consultation response: Defra review of nitrates and slurry storage regulations

The NFU has submitted a full and robust response to the initial Defra consultation on the review of nitrates and slurry storage regulations.

Following stakeholder comments and a ministerial decision since the Nitrate Pollution Prevention Regulations were introduced in 2015, the government has committed to review nitrates regulations by 30 March 2020.

Defra made the decision to include the Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil Regulations in the review as part of its ambition to promote good nutrient management and set up long-term goals in the area.

The NFU's response draws upon the NFU submission to the Environment Audit Committee nitrates inquiry last year, as well as fresh input from staff and members.

Further stakeholder engagement was put on hold by Defra in the run up to the general election but the NFU is set to continue the conversation through face-to-face meetings over the coming months.
