NFU comment

NFU President Meurig Raymond said: “Farmers have been hit with increased costs and are feeling the squeeze with many struggling to manage cash flows faced with higher prices for feed, fertiliser and fuel.

“We know the rise in inflation and food inflation will present its own challenges for people at home doing their daily shop. But the link between retail prices and farmgate prices tends to be weak and time-lagged and for any commodity, a combination of factors will influence pricing levels such as transport, energy, labour and packaging.

“What we need is more fairness in the supply chain to ensure that, when food is being sold at a certain level, it is reflected back to the farm gate and we receive a fair price for the food we produce.”
