Farming often involves using large pieces of machinery, dealing with unpredictable livestock and working long hours, often alone.
Together, these factors can make farms dangerous places to work, and there’s no doubt that many farming operations involve significant hazards that can result in injury or worse.
However, there are many cheap and common sense steps you can take to reduce the risk of an accident, making your farm safer and your business more productive into the bargain. This section of NFUonline has been improved to detail best practice and offer advice on reducing risk. It also includes links to further information and real-life case studies.
Over the last ten years, 455 people have died in accidents on British farms and 1,700 were seriously injured. Some 38 of those deaths came last year. Agriculture is now the most dangerous industry in the country, based on accidents per worker.
This doesn’t mean that farming operations should stop or that farms should be closed down - we can change these figures. Working together we can reduce the number of accidents and produce more while impacting less.
